About Rice

  • 直至2020年底，用作生產雜糧作物耕地面積為7公頃，佔香港農地利用的0.93%*。
  • 香港每年有兩造稻米 , 通常於3月至4月及6月至7月播種 , 7月至8月及11月至12月收割。
  • 香港大米年產量為9公噸。
  • 香港每人每年平均食用40公斤大米。
  • 香港食米的進口地區包括泰國、越南、澳洲、日本、美國、中國等。

  • Up to end 2020, around 7 hectares of farmland in HK is for growing rice or related crops*.
  • Two crops in a year:
    • Plant the seed in March/April and June/July, harvest in July/August and November/December.
  • Yearly rice production 9MT in HK.

  • Rice importing to HK including countries of Thailand, Vietnam, Australia, Japan, USA, China, etc.

Local Heirloom Rice Varieties

  • 稻米，曾經是本港主要的農產品。
  • 本地稻米種植，隨著香港經濟轉型和都市化，亦續漸式微。
  • 現時本地約有10個農場種植水稻，總面積約36斗種，產量每年約9噸。
  • Rice was once the main agricultural product in Hong Kong.
  • Production of local rice had been diminished following urbanization and development of our economy.
  • At present, there are 10 local farms growing rice, with total area of about 36 dau chung*, and an annual yield of about 9 tonnes.

* 1 dau chung (d.c.) = 7,260 sq. ft.

  • 上世紀六十年代，香港的水稻種子曾交給國際種子銀行保存。
  • 為保存的本地稻米品種，以增加存護本地農作物品種的種源。
  • 漁農署於2019年從美國及菲律賓的種子銀行取得了本地稻米品種：
    • 花腰仔
    • 絲苗
    • 齊眉
    • 白殼齊眉
  • In the 1960s, local rice seed lines were sent to seedbanks overseas with a view to preserving local heirloom rice varieties and conserving local varieties with historical origin.
  • In 2019, AFCD had acquired rice seeds of local varieties from USDA (USA) and IRRI (International Rice Research Institute, Philippines).

  • 為符合本地植物檢疫相關條例要求，引入的稻米品種須進行試種，確認沒有檢疫病蟲害後，才可進行較大面積的栽培。
  • 2020年初，於漁農自然護理署的大龍實驗農場完成了檢疫試種，並未有發現檢疫相關的病害。
  • 隨即，於大龍實驗農場內進行留種栽培試驗。

  • The rice seeds from the overseas seedbanks are required to be planted in small scale under quarantine to comply with our plant quarantine requirement. Upon confirmation of pest-free, the seeds can be planted in open field.
  • In early 2020, the rice seed passed the quarantine requirement in Tai Lung Experimental Station.
  • Immediately thereafter, cultivation trials and seed-saving was carried out in Tai Lung Experimental Station.

  • 從播種到採收約需100至120日
  • 於環控溫室內繁殖留種，確保種子不受外來因素污染

Seed-saving of Rice

  • The period from sowing to harvest takes about 100-120 days.
  • Seed-saving was conducted in a controlled-environment greenhouse to ensure that cross-pollination with another variety does not occur.

白殼齊眉 的特色

  • 根據「 花腰仔」及「絲苗」的基因定序測試，該些品種生長表現穩定，可向業界介紹。
  • 由種子銀行取得的本地稻米品種，未必具備作為經濟生產品種的潛力，但對於保留本港歷史及文化回憶有一定的價值。
  • Based on results of DNA sequencing for "Fa Yiu Tsai" and "See Mew", both varieties have stable performance and are suitable for introducing to the farmers.
  • The local heirloom rice varieties may not have the potential for economic production. However, they are valuable to preserving our historical and cultural memories.
